you may remember a series of articles in the examiner suggesting that transsexuals are in the mainstream these days, thanks to tv (no pun intended) and the internet. well, i came across the above ad in the phoenix new times, our local free culture & entertainment weekly newspaper – i’d equate it to the village voice, for those who read my blog on the east coast.
on the up side, there’s no “shemale” or “chick with a dick” verbiage, and compared to the rest of the ads for, um, escorts, it’s rather, well, mainstream. is there a downside? i suppose that depends on where you stand on the sex work issue. while i like to imagine that no woman should be forced to engage in sex work, i also understand that for many trans women, especially those of us who are not white and educated, as i am privileged to be, there are sometimes few other options. i just hope she does well, and doesn’t get hurt.

She’s on the circuit: LA-PHX-Vegas-Denver-Chicago-NYC-Boston-etc etc etc. Does CL and the Beat locally as well, iirc.
Violence isn’t as much a problem as the the likelihood of being robbed (sometimes at gunpoint).
As you know, I’m pretty sex positive, myself, and agree with you that no one should *have* to do it to survive, and I have had questions about the motivations to do so.
But no matter how hard it gets for me, I just can’t see myself doing it.

i had a couple of opportunities in the past. i guess my current situation speaks to that – i decided to work for the bank instead. less money, but safer.

Well, I have to say, I love that second outfit. I love the way the two outfits match up together and compliment each other. Does she design her own clothes? If so, that could be her true calling and I’d advise her to branch out into regular fashion designing…
