guidelines

modern medicine reports that the journal of clinical endocrinology & metabolism has published a set of guidelines for endocrine treatment of transsexual persons. read the abstract here. the article in modern medicine states:

The researchers write that transsexual people seeking to develop physical characteristics of the desired gender need a safe, effective hormone regimen.

no shit.

well, at least there’s some progress.

  1. I’ve been very lucky in that my endocrinologist has a long history of treating trans patients but I’m glad to see some progress being made for the rest of us.

  2. To add, I’m especially grateful that they have come out with a recommendation on treating young patients. I firmly believe that the best course of action for those under 16 is to simply delay the onset of puberty and wait until the child is absolutely sure. No one under the age of 16 needs to be taking these hormones, no one.

  3. i’ve been lucky as well in that the doctor i was seeing when i started transition had hundreds of trans patients before me, so had many years of experience. i’m seeing a doctor now who specializes in lgbt medical care here in phoenix, so again i was lucky.

regarding the age at which to start hormones, i have mixed feelings. i knew i wanted to transition as early as age 13. i sometimes wonder how different my life would have been, had i had the agency to do so at that time.
