a new age

i’m watching the latest episode of the sarah connor chronicles on fox on demand. this episode appears to cast a trans woman in a role in which her trans-ness isn’t the main focus of her character. she’s just a regular person. she’s not killed, or raped, or a sex worker. yet, anyway – i’m only half-way through the episode. i just had to stop watching and blog about it.

ok, perhaps i spoke too soon. but still, i see this as a good thing.

  1. I fell asleep watching this episode. Nothing against it, I was just exhausted so I will have to que up Hulu once more when I get elsewhere.

  2. Not to spoil anything for those who haven’t seen the whole episode, but I would argue that the character wasn’t really a trans character, since she was cross-living in order to hide, not to relieve gender discomfort.

  3. i’d argue that. she made a few references to not wanting to go back to living the way she used to, and finally living free, etc. while it’s true that hiding prompted her decision to transition at that time, i got the distinct feeling she had wanted to transition for a long time.

  4. Interesting – I read the “not wanting to go back” as referring to the old life of being in the dark, of following orders instead of questioning things, not as going back to living as male. It seemed to me that her new life of being outside the establishment and her willingness to think for herself instead of accepting everything at face value was the true freedom that she was cherishing. But that’s not to say you couldn’t be right since both interpretations are equally valid and we can’t really know what’s going through the character’s mind unless we ask the scriptwriter.

  5. perhaps when the dvd comes out, they’ll have a producer’s commentary version. i’d be interested to know which interpretation was intended by the writer. perhaps my own life history influenced my own interpretation.
