the whole idea that to make something illegal, is to make it less likely to occur, especially when it comes to behavior, is faulty. guns laws are a perfect example. the criminal, being a person who by definition breaks laws, doesn't pay attention to places where guns are illegal. only law abiding citizens will follow those laws. so who ends up having the advantage? the law breakers.

there's a highly vocal group of people who argue that shooting sprees like the one at virginia tech could have been avoided with stronger gun laws. i so disagree. allowing law abiding citizens who are trained in the safe use of guns to carry them would have stopped the virginia tech shooter after his first or second kill. or even before he started, if he feared that someone in his vicinity might be armed.

i have nothing against background checks and other gun laws that ensure responsible, law abiding citizens are able to legally purchase guns. but i am totally against forbidding the purchase and ownership of guns outright, like in washington, d.c. even in new jersey, when i was living there, and had to file all kinds of paperwork, fingerprints, references, and endure all kinds of background checks and wait 2 months to obtain a firearm purchasing permit - at least i was able to purchase guns so i could defend myself in my home.

Oh, AMEN. Hub and I were talking yesterday, about DC's mayor's push to regulate gun shows more.

You realize, of course, that DC does not HAVE gun shows. Because guns are illegal in DC. So it is not his business. But, regardless. In the wise words of Hubby:

"HOW many gun shows are there? Filled with law-abiding, patriotic Americans. And HOW many massacres have there been at gun shows? NONE. And if there WAS a nut at a gun show, that would be the world's fastest massacre, EVER, because all the good guys would turn around and end it. But universities, high schools, places like that that are run by anti-gun liberals, THOSE places have shootings all the time. You'd think they'd realize that banning guns makes gun violence MORE likely, but nooooo."
