Last night I wrote a friend a rant that was full of expletives and frustration. Most of my disgruntlement was from the Wednesday's passage in the House of Representatives of the sexual orientation only Employment Non-Discrimination Act. It was a historic day for gays and lesbians (if only symbolically), but it was a setback for the GLBT movement as a whole. It will now be much harder to pass a gender inclusive bill, now that one has passed with sexual orientation only. Another worrisome ... Read More

Hero Worship

“What makes us heroic? Confronting simultaneously our supreme suffering and our supreme hope.” — Friedrich Nietzsche
Over the past few years, the transgender community has had its share of reports of heroism from Mara Keisling and Lisa Mottet of the National Gay & Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF) about the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) and [...]

“What makes us heroic? Confronting simultaneously our supreme suffering and our supreme hope.” — Friedrich Nietzsche Over the past few years, the transgender community has had its share of reports of heroism from Mara Keisling and Lisa Mottet of the National Gay & Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF) about the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) and Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA). It flew in the face of what this writer and many others active in the trans rights game knew as conventional wisdom. ... Read More

Observations From A Protest

by Vanessa Edwards Foster

“Don’t you know you’re talking about a revolution, sounds like a whisper” — “Talkin’ ‘Bout A Revolution,” Tracy Chapman
Well, finally woke up from a nap after a tough weekend protesting the Human Rights Campaign National Banquet in Washington DC. On one hand, I hate these last-minute actions where you have to travel halfway across [...]

“Don't you know you're talking about a revolution, sounds like a whisper” — “Talkin’ ‘Bout A Revolution,” Tracy Chapman Well, finally woke up from a nap after a tough weekend protesting the Human Rights Campaign National Banquet in Washington DC. On one hand, I hate these last-minute actions where you have to travel halfway across the country. + They’re obviously quite expensive (not to mention no planning or chance for budgeting). + They’re physically taxing as sleep is minimal (you sleep on the road ... Déjà Vu All Over Again!?! Do We Hafta???

by Vanessa Edwards Foster

“So I get on my knees and pray … we won’t get fooled again!” — the Who

(Obviously the ultimate victory would be equal rights for us all, jobs and all.) All of the years of HRC’s historic missteps seemed to magically ... Read More

Taking The Good With The Bad

by Marti Abernathey

According to KTVB.com, Idaho Inmate Jennifer Spencer has won a small battle in the fight to get hormone replacement therapy in prison.
While this is definitely a win for humane treatment of prisoners  and for transsexuals that are incarcerated in Idaho, I have to wonder  what the blacklash will be. These are the kind of cases [...]

While this is definitely a win for humane treatment of prisoners  and for transsexuals that are incarcerated in Idaho, I have to wonder  what the blacklash will be. These are the kind of cases that rile up the nastier side of the right wing. Examples from the comments of One News Now: Although I do not live in Idaho, I think it is ... Read More

I’m A Bitch, I’m A Lover

by Marti Abernathey

Meredith Brooks once sang:
“ I’m a bitch, I’m a lover
I’m a child, I’m a mother
I’m a sinner, I’m a saint
I do not feel ashamed
I’m your hell, I’m your dream
I’m nothing in between
You know, you wouldn’t want it any other way“
But I guess there are some gay men who aren’t channeling Meredith. From the Washington [...]
