Hillary Leaves Off The T
November 29th, 2007 by Autumn SandeenThis is what Hillary Clinton’s campaign put out as a press release today:
New Poll Shows Hillary Leading Among LGB Voters
In a new survey released by Hunter College, Hillary Clinton leads all Democratic candidates in support among lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) Americans. According to the poll, Hillary leads with 63 percent, 41 points ahead of the next candidate.
“I’m honored to have the support of so many in the LGB community,” said Clinton. “Together, we can end the divisiveness of the past seven years and change the direction of this country so that we embrace the full diversity of our nation.”
The poll also found that 72 percent of LGB likely voters consider Senator Clinton a supporter of gay rights. As President, Hillary will also work to end discrimination in adoption laws, sign hate crimes legislation and ENDA into law, and put an end to the failed policy of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. She will work to make sure that gay and lesbian couples in committed relationships have the same rights and responsibilities as all Americans.
I’m posting this specifically show that the Hillary Clinton for President Campaign left out the “T” when referring to the “LGB Community.” The first two paragraphs of the press release might not have mentioned T’s because they didn’t find enough T’s to be statistically significant for their poll, but I would think that in the last paragraph — where she mentions what she would do as president — she certaintly could have added that she was for LGBT civil rights/equality.
As it is, it looks like she’s just for LGB civil rights/equality.
Given the recent mess with ENDA, I find it noteworthy that her campaign’s messaging about the “alphabet soup” of communities was one that left off the T. Whether or not leaving off the T out this media release was intentional or not, to me it sure seems to be pretty poor form.

The poll was commissioned by HRC.

Hillary is a political hack… She is NOT a friend to Queer folk whether you are Gal, Lesbian, Bisexual or Transgender. Bill although probably the best president in the last 50 years was the same.. with his Don’t ask, Don’t Tell. I think the LGBTQ community should support Dennis Kucunich for president.. he is the only candidate who has said.. he would support Gay Marriage.. Hillary has flip flopped just like her Husband… lets be honest.. Hillary has NO more experience then Dennis or Obama.. she was a terrible first lady.. and her performance as Senator has been mediocre

You can’t expect her to make a claim that the poll didn’t make. Otherwise, she would be hammered for making an unsupportable claim. Further, I don’t know why you’re giving a pass on the pollsters. They didn’t want to assess the trans vote, so we weren’t included in the poll. If they hadn’t gotten a statistically enough sample, they would have said so.
The same poll also had tucked away in it the GLB community’s support for T isseues, which was 36%.

You could say that she’s crossed the “T’s.”

No friend of ours, these broken promises clintons. How any lgbT could ever cast a vote for Hillary i will never know. Do not fall for the lies people. HRC is a neo lib the same as a Neo Con only in different clothes. That she gets any Human Rights Campaign money is a travesty. She is the worst of em all. imo

It is sad… that we might be forced to 4 years of Hillary… She is not what the LGBTQ community needs. Unfortunatly Dennis most probably will not get the nomination. And the best choice of the two leading democrats Obama may not get the nomination. It might come down to chosing between the lesser of two evils. Clinton or a Repug-nican. Honestyly.. if you really think about it a vote for an independent or not voting at all is a vote for Repugnicans by default. It is sad that only these two parties have a real chance to get ellected. But you haved to weigh the benefits to the travesty of another 4 years of Right Wing Christian control of our country. Hillary may not fight to advance us in society but she will at least no do things to activily harm us as Christian controlled Republicans will

I’m a bit skeptical that the least supportive candidate on lgbt issues is getting such overwhelming support from lgb voters.
Leaving out trans queers from the rest of the queer community seems to be a common divide-and-conquer tactic by conservative Democrats like Clinton and Pelosi.

I think Aravosis must have written that press release for her.
